What Causes Anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling of unease involving fear and tension. From time to time everyone experiences these feelings. However, when these emotions are so severe that they interfere with every day activities, it can be an indication of a more serious condition known as anxiety disorder. There are several types of anxiety disorders, which can be triggered by a combination of psychological, physical and environmental factors.

Genetics

Studies reveal that certain types of anxiety disorders are genetically linked. This suggests that the condition may be as a result of deep-rooted family characteristics. In cases concerning identical twins separated at birth, the chances of one child developing panic disorder, when the other did was 30% greater. The risk of developing panic disorder is increased by up to 20% if there is a close family member with the condition.

Neurological causes

Malfunction of the nervous system is a major contributing factor of anxiety disorders. One way in which this break down is manifested, is by causing chemical imbalances in the brain. Modern science indicates that chemical imbalance may occur as a result of past, present or perceived occurrences. These distractions oftentimes cause drastic mood changes, which in turn interrupts the normal behavior pattern.

Physical causes

Certain medical conditions have been linked to panic disorder. Such conditions include obstructive sleep apnea, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome as well as premenstrual syndrome and migraines. Other conditions that trigger anxiety disorders can be mitral valve prolapse, thyroid problems, hypoglycemia and in rare cases by tumors.

Psychological and social factors

For no apparent reason, persons who suffer from anxiety disorder may develop a sense of dread. In the minds of such persons there is a pending catastrophe. This feeling is often accompanied by sweating and shivering.

From a psychological perspective, anxiety is the body’s way of responding to environmental stressors. Issues such as physical or mental abuse, the loss of a loved one or even an upcoming special event can all contribute to anxiety disorders.

Since anxiety appears to occur from being in sync with environmental factors, the solution would be to identify and eliminate the ones which trigger the condition.

Drug use

Use of addictive substances such as nicotine, caffeine, alcohol and certain pharmaceutical drugs can set off anxiety disorders. Some individuals may react negatively to the chemical components of a particular drug, whether prescribed or not. At the same time, withdrawal from these drugs may intensify the disorder.
