The country wide recession has placed the workplace into new heights – more productivity is demanded for fear of losing their jobs and homes, and it’s enough to cause someone a full-fledged panic attack. Clinical psychologists, both off-shore and in-house, report that increasing numbers of therapy requests has ballooned up ever since. When recession began, everybody started to worry too much about getting laid off; they started to put in more hours, no vacation, and most of the time, they are constantly exposed to a high-pressure work environment. Anxiety panics these days are hugely increasing in numbers. Employee Assistance Programs where offered, are now increasing in staff as well to accommodate the ever-increasing number of employee calls about depression, panic and anxiety attacks, and all the consequences of the economic reality.
Dr. Joseph Cilona, Psychologist in Manhattan, offers help and some how-to’s to deal with the same panic disorder caused by the new workplace:
1. Devise new strategies and tactics. High stress levels can be daunting to a first timer, but adaptation is the key and find out what works best – if it’s a change in work routines, a change in mindset, counseling, or holistic treatments.
2. Ask the people close to you. Have you been acting weird and different lately? Their opinion might serve as an important eye-opener about changing mindsets.
3. Care less about the stigma. Never feel inadequate; calling for medical help to deal with anxiety panics of this type is never different from calling maintenance about something you can’t fix.
4. Squeeze in a time for an enjoyable workout – After-office hours work out is the best stress relievers which arm you for battle for the next day, both in the health front and in the psychosocial front. It enables you to handle stress and tasks more efficiently, aside from propping up your immune systems. Chaos will always be at the workplace, it’s just about the mindset and how you deal with it.
